Prevention or Cure? Chiropractor Sutton Coldfield

If I asked 100 people in Sutton Coldfield the question, “What is best, prevention or cure?”  I would guess that 100 would answer, “Prevention.”  So why is it that we as a society we do not practice prevention?

Prevention is like waiting for nothing.  If, by your actions, you were able to prevent a year of infections, constant colds, back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches and a few weeks of hospitalisation, you would not know it because it did not happen.  Therefore, you have no way of knowing whether you actually did prevent anything.

As human beings we tend to act for two reasons.  One is to gain a benefit, the other to prevent a loss.  Most of the people who visit our clinic are there to prevent a loss, the loss of their health.  When our patients understand how their body works the majority of them continue to visit the clinic for what we call wellness or maintenance care. This is to gain a benefit and the continuation of their health.  However, fewer people come to us in a healthy condition saying that they want to continue in this way by signing up for maintenance care.

It is difficult for people in general to become enthusiastic about maintenance care because the benefit is not obvious. The best that can happen is nothing – even though that is because we prevented bad things from happening or a reoccurrence of their initial problem. We only tend to really appreciate our health when it is threatened and we fear that we may lose it.

So we have to look at this from a different perspective.  Of course there are no guarantees but we need to maintain ourselves by doing the right things.  By this I mean we need to eat properly, exercise, visiting the Chiropractor regularly and sleep well so at the end of every day, week, month and year we can appreciate the fact that nothing happened!
